Rural Initiatives

The Rural Southwest New Mexico Integrated Urban Forestry Project (RSNMIUFP), led by Western New Mexico University (WNMU), aims to create a sustainable urban forestry framework in six underserved communities. This initiative includes establishing a Southwest New Mexico Community Forestry Network, developing a stackable Urban Forestry Certificate Program in Arboriculture, and creating a community and campus arboretum as a living laboratory. By planting 1,000 trees and promoting tree equity, the project addresses local workforce development and environmental needs while empowering communities to define their urban forestry priorities and fostering long-term sustainability.

LITEPATH (Latinx Interdisciplinary Technology-Related Education Pathways) at Western New Mexico University aims to improve career opportunities for Hispanic and underrepresented students through online learning pathways. This initiative provides essential technology and hybrid instructional models for accelerated certifications in data science, digital video, UX/UI, and instructional design. By establishing specialized online learning facilities across WNMU locations, LITEPATH connects students with high-employment, high-salary careers, addressing regional educational disparities and fostering workforce development in an economically challenged area.

The Transportation, Innovation, and Mobilities Equity (TIME) Project at Western New Mexico University aims to improve mobility and access in rural communities through three main areas: safe access to nature and Complete Streets, innovative transportation solutions, and workforce development. The project focuses on creating comprehensive plans to enhance multi-modal access, integrate alternative transportation options, and develop technical certifications that meet local economic needs. By collaborating with regional partners and leveraging data, TIME seeks to promote equitable transportation solutions that foster connectivity and sustainable economic growth in the region.
