This semester, we continue with our SEE workshop series, focusing specifically on supporting the development of core practical (and academic) skills. Each 90-minute standalone session, while open to all, appeals particularly to faculty seeking to improve their connections with WNMU students—namely, Latinx—and to enhance their teaching toolboxes in pursuit of facilitating greater student success at our Hispanic Serving Institution. All workshops will be delivered in person and via Zoom. No sign up or registration required.

Workshop #5, Supporting College-level Reading Skills

New Mexico continues to frame reading (literacy) using the terms “Science of Reading” (SOR) and “Structured Literacy”. Although these frameworks emphasize reading achievement and propose to ensure learning to read for all students through direct and explicit instruction, these frameworks are not enough to support the lifelong literacy needs and development of our Western students. This workshop provides a brief introduction to SOR and Structured Literacy from the lens of our adult readers. Participants will gain resources and practical strategies for supporting reading development, including our students who communicate in English as an additional language, in college-level reading across all academic disciplines.

12:00-1:30 p.m. on January 30, 2025, in the Global Resource Center (GRC) ABC Rooms & Zoom Link

Series co-moderated by Roberta Brown and Michael Cook

Open to all Faculty and Staff
